You can’t map a path to success without knowing your starting point. Yet many business owners rush into planning without taking a clear-eyed look at where they stand today.
This step requires honesty. By understanding your true position, you’ll make better decisions and avoid surprises that can derail progress.
Here are five questions to help you define where you are now (warts and all):
1. Are your leaders aligned?
If asked independently, would the owners or leadership team describe the same vision? Misalignment creates conflict and stalls growth. Alignment must come first.
2. What activities drive your results?
Go beyond sales figures. Look at the number of leads, your conversion rates, average sales value, and the activities that actually generate revenue. You need this baseline to improve performance.
3. How engaged is the team?
Engaged teams consistently outperform disengaged ones. Does your team understand the vision and how their role contributes to it? Without buy-in, leverage is impossible.
4. Are your reporting systems effective?
If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Review your reporting. Is it accurate, timely, and actionable? The quality of your decisions depends on the quality of your data.
5. What are your biggest vulnerabilities?
Identify the top five risks or weaknesses in your business. This could be cashflow pressures, high staff turnover, succession challenges, or weak systems. Be honest about what keeps you awake at night.
Taking stock isn’t comfortable, but it’s essential. Skip this step and you’ll be building plans on shaky ground.
